BOTOC: Kahncepts Results #13

December 6, 2011 in BOTOCS (Battles of the Ongoing Classes), Lesly's Thoughts

Teaching a Kahncept is Just Like Acting!!!! How?
Chapter 2. Ya’ Gotta Let The Input Change the Output.

B. Those of you who listened, flourished. But many of you just plowed right through and did exactly what you planned.  Again with the grade school reports:

YOU

Hi. Our Kahncept is Antitheticals. My teammate
will now begin with the lecture.

(Teammate lectured.)

YOU

Ok, now it’s time for our video.

(You showed a video.)

YOU

Ok, now it’s time for our game.

(You led us in a game.)

YOU

Ok, now it’s time for our exercise.

(You led us in an exercise.)

YOU

Ok, now it’s time for our scene.

(You led or coached us in a scene.)

You didn’t notice that your lecture was putting your audience to sleep, that no one was following you, that no one cared. You had no idea that your game was failing, your coaching wasn’t working, the scene made no sense. When that kinda thing happens, you have to STOP! In the Name of Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDPjYZxi0n8), and fix it! Like I say in the Intensive, if your surgeon leaves a scalpel inside of you, should he just close you up and hope for the best, or should he, I dunno, GO BACK IN AND GET IT OUT?! (That’s a rhetorical question.)

Your Kahncept Presentations are just like your acting: you can’t plan what you’re gonna do and send your body in to do it for you. YOU have to be there as well – responding to what’s happening in the moment. Theoretically, that’s why so many of us love live theatre – who knows what’s gonna happen? I love the play THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH by Thornton Wilder (Mike G, read it!) because the whole “set is falling down about our ears,”  as the play opens. You – the actor – simply HAVE to be present, aware and in-the-freakin’ moment ‘cuz if you aren’t, you could get conked on the head by a flat. So cool.

You gotta WANT that. Ya’ gotta seek that OUT. And right now many of you don’t. You prefer safety. Safety? Is not sexy, exciting, cool, marketable or employable.

In one Relationship Kahncept, they just listed types of relationships. They didn’t tell us why we needed to know about them or how we could utilize them to help us in our work. It was as if we didn’t know what relationships are. Um, hello? We’re not four.  It’s almost like the team lost track of the purpose of the Kahncept – to teach us how to let the Kahncepts HELP us in our work, not to just define the Kahncept.  (They did, however, write a cute song which you can see a bit of here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJRYcJjy-yg).
